CACTS Conference September 1989

Icebreaking, Cold Weather Operations, Vehicles

St Johns, Newfoundland

Introduction

The physical Conference event had to be cancelled, but six of the twelve originally planned papers were gathered by Mike Hinchey, and published through Transport Canada in the volume presented here (TP8979). Following normal practise in this period the conference was presented with cooperation of The Hovercraft Society and the U.S. Hovercraft Society.

The front matter contains the table of contents, introduction to the background to this conference, and the invitation leaflet issued once papers had been committed.

At this time St Johns University, Newfoundland were engaged in much research into ACV performance and characteristics in the ice environment, as Transport Canada were looking into the potential Air Cushion Icebreaking bow platform to attach to icebreakers for operation in the Great Lakes. In this same period there were experimental operations of ACVs in Antarctica as well as on Canada’s North Slope.

The papers included here give valuable insight into research and operational experience in the ice environment. In addition, relatively rare insight is given into large hovercraft development and testing through the 1980’s with the Model 7210, and 722 in China.
