CACTS Air Cushion Technology Conference 1998

25th Canadian Symposium on Air Cushion Technology

Montreal, Quebec, June 16 – 19, 1998

Sponsored by the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute.

Introduction

The proceedings from this conference were published in a transactions volume at the end of the year. It took some time to receive and collate a number of the presentations made at the conference. The transactions volume is broken into six presentation sessions, two Tutorial sessions and an addendum. Session 2 which was intended to be a in the form of a workshop was not reported formally in Session 5 as intended – operational experience was presented in various papers given in other sessions and so active discussion at this session was limited.

There were 20 papers presented, and an additional paper on rescue hovercraft experience during a flood in The Netherlands included as an addendum.
In addition, two tutorial sessions gave insight into design synthesis for larger craft in Tutorial 1, and examples of design for light craft skirt systems and propulsion systems in Tutorial 2.

To begin the conference a keynote presentation was made by David Lavis covering four decades of ACV and SES development worldwide. The paper extends to 37 pages and includes a succinct overview useful both for general interest and as a link to research.

Session 3 included three papers on development of Wing in Ground Effect craft in China and Japan, together with UTIAS work on bag and finger skirt dynamic response, and the latest research by William Bertelsen.

Session 4 covered development of the AT2500 light hovercraft in Canada, and a summary of construction in Canada of the CCG AP.1-88/400.

Session 5 had three papers focussed on the LCAC including details of the new deep skirt development. A summary of light ACV propulsion optimisation was given by G J Vernier from France. M Vernier used this paper as a framework for his tutorial in Tutorial 2.

Session 6 focussed on sport and utility craft with a view of ACV sport from the French perspective by P Lepicier, and development of the Revtec personal hovercraft by O Ellis.

There were 61 attendees to this conference.
