Company Background

At Osprey we provide marine innovation services.

Osprey 5 Hovercraft development

Osprey 5 Hovercraft was designed by Paul McCollum and was the next generation of hovercraft from his very successful Osprey 3.

In early 2000 the company was purchased, and the factory was relocated to Brighton, which had excellent access to the River Adur for demonstrations of the hovercraft to customers.

One of these customers was Eon Productions who produce the James Bond films. After a successful demonstration of the Osprey 5 on the River Adur and with action unit film director Vic Armstrong onboard, the decision was made to use the hovercraft in the film “Die another Day”.

One of the craft used in the film is on display at the Hovercraft Museum, Lee on Solent, which is well worth a visit. See the James Bond Craft at this link to the Hovercraft Museum site.

The Osprey 5 has been sold to rescue organisations in the past as well as having that kudos of being used in the Bond film. The potential of this craft is for Search & Rescue, military and leisure use.

A new transmission configuration has been developed including a Ford 4 cylinder, 1.5 litre diesel engine delivering 100 HP to the output shaft through a centrifugal clutch and rubber coupling to a slower speed 12 blade fan hub.  This reduces fuel consumption, increases range/endurance and reduces noise from both the engine and the propeller.

Osprey 5 Trailer

Our twin axle, fully braked hover-on/hover-off trailers are purpose built from aluminium to both optimise speed of deployment and recovery, by self-centring the Osprey 5 on the trailer bed and maintaining compliance with road regulations such as EC Certificate of Conformity.

The combined weight of the Osprey 5 on the trailer is less than 1400Kg.  The trailer can be loaded in a standard ISO shipping container and its width with the Osprey 5 on board is under 2300mm.

Our trailers are manufactured by Lizard Trailers (SW) Ltd. Their internet site is  https://www.lizardtrailers.co.uk

Marine Innovation Services

We believe Osprey 5 is the first composite hovercraft for commercial applications that is equipped with the 4-cylinder Ford diesel power train and will be compliant with the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s Hovercraft Code of Practice for Safety.

It is a stable and buoyant platform whether under power or not.  It can be configured to carry a pylon for radars and ancillaries or a stretcher on adjustable rails for CofG control, or role equipment such as for drone operations to extend its “detect and respond” functionality to incidents such as Search and Rescue, Fisheries Protection, Healthcare outreach, Environmental Survey, Pollution response, Eco Tourism etc.

The diesel power train is coupled to a 12-blade fan hub which results in coarser pitch, slower rotational speed, reduced noise, increased thrust, reduced fuel consumption and increased range/endurance.
