Griffon Hoverwork rebranded as Griffon Marine in early 2025, reflecting the company’s extensive skills, core competencies, and commitment to maritime excellence. With over six decades of expertise in amphibious and high-speed marine vessel design, build, and support, this new branding highlights the company’s enduring capabilities and world-class service offerings.
Griffon Marine is structured into three core companies—Solutions, Shipyard, and Support—each focused on delivering excellence in their respective fields.
As part of this transition, Griffon Hoverwork’s renowned expertise in hovercraft design, build, and maintenance continues under the new Griffon Marine brand. This ensures the company remains a leader in amphibious transport while reinforcing its broader marine capabilities.
“Our transition to Griffon Marine reflects the strengths and expertise that have been at the heart of our company for decades,” said Mark Downer, Chief Executive Officer of Griffon Marine. “This new identity better represents the diverse and high-quality capabilities we offer in vessel design, construction, and support. While our name has changed, our commitment to delivering exceptional maritime solutions remains unwavering. We are now better positioned to meet the changing requirements of maritime customers and the challenging demands of future commercial and military marine activity.”
With a legacy built on engineering excellence and a forward-thinking approach to marine technology, Griffon Marine continues to be a trusted partner in small, fast, and amphibious vessel operations worldwide.
Griffon Marine has consolidated into two UK premises in Southampton and Portsmouth, and as a respected mid-scale UK marine manufacturing business has in the last couple of years won the Maritime UK award for International Trade, three Maritime Solent awards and a Hampshire Business award.
As the world leaders in the design and manufacture of hovercraft – marine vessels which can access shallow water, land transitions, obstacle strewn river rapids and flooded areas where conventional boats cannot operate – Griffon Marine offer a range of craft stemming from a 5 man special forces or rescue craft through endurance patrol craft and 80 to 200 person ferries to a design ready to support amphibious forces deploying their heaviest equipment, at speed, direct from open sea to dry land.
Prior to the transition to Griffon Marine, Griffon Hoverwork has supplied significant support to the UK Royal Marines for fast boat maintenance and upgrading. The transition recognises the wider opportunities available in the maritime fast logistics market in the UK and worldwide without losing focus on the existing and potential amphibious hovercraft clientele.
Griffon Marine are respected as a company that nurtures long term relationships by acting with integrity, evidenced by returning customers, a strong supply chain and employees whose innovations are taken actively on board. They run a quantified approach to project delivery with robust production engineering and visual workshop project control.
Adopting a strong culture of quality engineering, lean manufacture and assurance processes, they have been certified ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018. In delivery of an unusual marine product, they are very used to working to the standards set by classification societies, national government marine regulators and international armed forces fleet authorities as well as the stringent supplier standards expected by major corporates including oil and gas and shipping entities.
Developed from the acquisition of the UK’s two leading hovercraft manufacturers by the Bland Group in 2008, Griffon Hoverwork brought together over 50 years of Hovercraft development, engineering design, manufacture and operator support experience stemming back to their invention by Christopher Cockerell in 1954.
The company now has more than 200 hovercraft in operation with military, commercial and rescue service customers in over 45 countries. This includes a single order for 12 large hovercraft for the Indian Coast Guard, the largest craft built in UK since 1980 (BHT 150 now operated by the Korean Coastguard) and fleets for the Canadian Coastguard, Pakistan Navy, Peruvian Marines and Colombian Marines (latter two for counter narco-terrorist operations) and Saudi Border Guard. Commercial operators of their craft operate ferry services in UK and Canada, oil operation support in USA and Kazakhstan and project support in Indonesia.
Recent projects have included three 80 passenger hovercraft for Oita prefecture in Japan, and smaller utility craft for Poland, and Canada.
